Austin EditAt the Boys & Girls Clubs, self-confidence blossoms & Austin has experienced that firsthand. Austin joined the Christiansburg Unit of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia last summer as a rising 7th grader. At the beginning of Summer Camp, Austin was very shy, had little self-confidence, and had no interest in participating in any sports activities.

Since joining the Club, Austin has participated in programs that have brought him out of his shell, including Healthy Habits, Triple Play, and SMART Moves. Healthy Habits and Triple Play have focused on increasing Austin’s daily physical activity and teaching him nutrition while SMART Moves has utilized interactive and fun activities to teach him about risky behavior prevention, such as resisting drugs and alcohol. During his first nine weeks at the Club, his parents, teachers, and even his sister reported that Austin had opened up and become more interested in sports.

The Club has had a positive influence on Austin’s mind, body, and soul – since joining, he has made the A/B honor roll for the first time in his school career and he has expressed a desire to try out for his middle school wrestling team. When asked why his grades have improved, Austin replied: “Because I come to the Club and get my work done”. He also told Boys & Girls Clubs’ staff that he decided to try out for the wrestling team because he had a “confidence boost” since joining the Club.

We are proud to work with children and teenagers just like Austin everyday across all 6 of our Club Sites. Our goal is to transform every timid and struggling child and teenager into a self-confident and excelling Boys & Girls Clubs’ Member.
