This summer, youth from our Eastern Montgomery Elementary Club took an unforgettable trip to the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, a hands-on adventure filled with curiosity, discovery, and inspiration.
From towering locomotives to early automobiles and aviation displays, our Club members explored how transportation has evolved through time. With wide eyes and eager questions, they walked through history and innovation, learning how people and technology have shaped the way we move through the world.

For many of our members, this was their first visit to a museum of this kind. They stood beneath massive engines, climbed aboard vintage trains, and marveled at the mechanics behind trains, planes, and automobiles. More than just a fun outing, this trip opened doors to STEM learning, career exploration, and an appreciation for engineering, design, and historical progress.
“Wow, I didn’t know people used to travel like that. It’s so weird,” one student exclaimed while standing next to a gleaming 611 steam engine, an icon of railroad history.
Field trips like this don’t just offer a change of scenery; they spark imaginations, expand horizons, and help Club members see themselves as inventors, historians, and innovators.
Special thanks to the Virginia Museum of Transportation staff for welcoming our young learners with open arms. It’s partnerships like these that help us inspire Great Futures, one experience at a time.
