On Thursday, August 3, a Kids Farmers Market was provided by Feeding Southwest Virginia at our Salem Club (serving Elementary and Middle school students at G.W. Carver Elementary). The organizations partnered with The Hokie Way (Virginia Tech student athletes) to provide this experience for Club members.
Kids Farmers Markets are interactive experiences that provide free produce and nutrition education to children of families who may not have the financial means to purchase produce on a consistent basis or do not have access to a reliable source of produce. Children learned valuable financial literacy skills in the process by “purchasing” produce using “Food Bank Bucks”, a faux currency.
The kids loved interacting with the student-athletes while filling their bags with produce. A fun time was had by all!
