Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia is offering increased opportunities for games and sports activities at its Bonsack and Roanoke Academy For Math and Science Clubs as the result of a $10,000 award from Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The award allows the Clubs to expand Healthy Habits programming as well as increase the number of daily physical fitness challenges for members. A Wii competition, pool tournaments, and Dance Dance Revolution competition are also planned.
Program funding includes a healthy eating initiative that invites nutritionists, chefs, and other healthy eating advocates to educate Club members about making healthy diet choices, preparing healthy foods, and the benefits of doing both of these activities. With a focus on organic and locally-produced ingredients, members learn healthy foods are available to them in their own community. Members also grow their own produce as a continuation of our successful community gardening project.
Triple Play is a recognized program at both BGCSWVA and BGCA to promote healthy, active lifestyles at all of their Clubs.
